Acceptance of Agenda, Minutes of T3 (see
draft minutes
), and Action Items
(see
AI List
).
2
Sub-Activity 2.2 (Roadmap Activity 2b; establishing a "GEO label")
3
Activity 3: Outreach to diverse scientific and technological communities
The sub-activities 3.1 (Production of promotion material) and 3.2 (Slide library on how GEOSS works)
have been stalled for some time and should be reactivated. Several recent events underlined the importance
of promotion material and a slide library.
4
Activity 5 (Presence of GEO at major symposia)
For the overall activity, having an outreach plan would be very helpful.
Russell Lefevre
has drafted
such a plan for EGIDA (available as
doc
),
and the Task team should consider whether elements of this plan can serve the
Task team. For Sub-Activity 5.1 (Identify major scientific conference and facilitate plenary
presentations on GEO and GEOSS) (and also the other sub-activities), an up-to-date list of major
conferences would be very helpful. An initial list is available at
http://www.geo-tasks.org/meetings_sandt
. Information
on major scientific meetings not included can be sent to info@geo-tasks.org.
For coordination of Sub-Activity 5.2 (Session on GEOSS-related
topics at major scientific meetings) and Sub-Activity 5.3 (Organize/promote side events at major
scientific meetings), it would be helpful to have an on-line up-to-date overview of who plans to
or has submitted session or event proposal to which meeting.
5
Input for next Task team report to the STC
The PoC of ST-09-02 will report on the Task Team work at the STC meeting, April 14-15, 2011,
in Sydney, Australia. All Task team members are invited to report relevant activities, achievements, and
issues to be addressed by the STC to the PoC.

Hans-Peter Plag

conferences.

Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2011-04-20.
He also reported that he had invited input for the GEO label document but so
far not received significant input.
2
Sub-Activity 2.2 (Roadmap Activity 2b; establishing a "GEO label")
The approach to the GEO label was briefly discussed.
Veronica Guidetti
emphasized that
a decision needs to be made whether the label should be assigned inside of GEO through GEO units or
outside through independent groups.
Hans-Peter Plag
voiced his opinion that a trustworthy label would have to
be assigned by groups outside of GEO.
Hans-Peter Plag
also emphasized the need for more coordination between the
GEO label-related activities of EGIDA, GEOVIQUA, and ST-09-02.
Veronica Guidetti
volunteered to take this message back to
Stefano Nativi.
Joan Maso
explained that GEOVIQUA was just starting and confirmed his readiness to coordinate with
EGIDA and ST-09-02.
It was agreed that
Hans-Peter Plag
would make available a structure of the GEO label report to the Task team
and invite contributions.
Action Item
ST2-T4-1:
Hans-Peter Plag
will prepare a structure of the GEO Label document and distribute it to the
ST-09-02 Task Team for comments and input.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2011-04-25.

Activity 3: Outreach to diverse scientific and technological communities
Hans-Peter Plag
explained that the sub-activities 3.1 (Production of promotion material) and
3.2 (Slide library on how GEOSS works)
have been stalled for some time and should be reactivated.
Several recent events had underlined the importance
of promotion material and a slide library.
Douglas Cripe
explained that original, the reaction of the Director of the GEO Secretariat to the proposal of a
publicly accessible slide
library had not be very positive. The Director prefered to handle such request on a case-by-case basis.
However, recently Australia had raised the issue in the EXCOM. Brasil reported that a search on google
for GEO had produced more than 500 hits with access to presentations. It was now likely that there
would be some development towards a kind of library. There would also some guidance directing people to
publications available on the GEO web page.
Hans-Peter Plag
added that the original idea of the slide library
was not to give access to complete presentations but rather a set of well explained slides that
people could integrate in their presentations.
The EGIDA workshop in Rome was brought up.
Hans-Peter Plag
pointed out that this workshop likely would
address aspect of the GEOSS Portfolio.
Douglas Cripe
agreed to contact Michael Williams to investigate
whether he would be able to attend the workshop.
The issue of guiding scientists oin their contributions and usage of GEOSS was brought up. It was suggested
to prepare a Science and Technology guide to GEOSS.
4
Activity 5 (Presence of GEO at major symposia)
Hans-Peter Plag
stated that for this activity, having an outreach plan would be very helpful.
Russell Lefevre
had drafted
such a plan for EGIDA (available as
doc
),
and the Task Team should consider whether elements of this plan can serve the
Task team. For Sub-Activity 5.1 (Identify major scientific conference and facilitate plenary
presentations on GEO and GEOSS) (and also the other sub-activities), an up-to-date list of major
conferences would be very helpful. An initial list had been made available by
Hans-Peter Plag
at
http://www.geo-tasks.org/meetings_sandt
. Information
on major scientific meetings not included could be sent to info@geo-tasks.org.
There was general agreement that the available list was a good starting point, and that it should be
further developed to have some interactive capabilities. It would be very good to have a coordination
and documentation platform for all GEOSS-related activities and events at major scientific meetings.
Action Item
ST2-T4-2:
All ST-09-02 members will provide information about major scientific conference to
info@geo-tasks.org.
Responsible:
All,
Deadline:
2011-05-31.
Joan Maso
brought up the idea of producing special issues on GEOSS. No specific action item was agreed upon,
but there was consensus that this should be followed up.
5
Input for next Task team report to the STC
Hans-Peter Plag
informed that he would report to the STC-16 about the status of the task activities. He
invited all participants to identfied issue where actions of the STC were needed or feedback from the
STC would be helpful. He invited all Task team members to report relevant activities, achievements, and
issues to be addressed by the STC to the PoC.
Vojko Bratina
requested that the STC should give more and clear guidance on what the STC want with respect to the
GEO Label.
Joan Maso
was interest to hear how fast the GEO Label was intended to be done. Considering that EGIDA and
GEOVICA were just beginning to work, this information would be highly appreciated.
Stuart Marsh
commented that
some rescheduling may be needed to account for the twon new projects.
Action Item
ST2-T4-3:
Hans-Peter Plag
will request feedback from the STC on a revised time schedule accounting for the
fact that EGIDA and GEOVIQUA will contribute to the GEO Label.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2011-04-16.
6
Any other business
Douglas Cripe
reported that there will be a presentation on GEO and GEOSS at the EGU, which should be
included in the S+T Meeting page.
Action Item
ST2-T4-4:
Douglas Cripe
will make available his EGU presentation on GEO/GEOSS for the S+T meeting page.
Responsible:
Douglas Cripe,

Stuart Marsh
informed about a series of discussion started in the frame of the EGIDA Work package 2, which
will address questions such as assessing relevance of data sets and services, Earth observation science priorities,
and continuity indicators.
