Publishing New Application: Initiating a new Entry

Publishing a new application starts with clicking on the 'New' link and entering the anticipated new application name into the respective input field and then clicking on the 'Save' button.

In the example, we have entered the application name 'volcanic ash monitoring'. After a click on Save, we are informed that the new entry has been successfully added and we can now edit this entry.

We can now complete the form. Note that partial entries can also be saved. In case you need to leave a form before finishing the complete entry, it is important to save the partial entry by clicking on the 'Save' button. Otherwise, all entered information is lost.

In order to publish the new entry, we complete the form. We first enter a concise description of the application, which in many cases can be modified and extended from a corresponding entry in a standard dictionary.

The entry definition status indicates to what extent the entry is completed. In many cases, it is safe to select initially 'Preliminary Draft' in the drop down menu (not shown).

The choice of societal sectors impacts to what extent the entry is discovered in searches. In order to make meaningful choices, it is recommended to be conservative and restrict the selection to those sectors to which the user type is clearly associated. In our example, we could have selected 'Academic' in addition to 'Commercial' and 'Governmental' since the monitoring of volcanic ash also has many research applications, but we preferred to focus on the main operational monitoring for governmental and commercial purposes.
